San Diego Elected Officials Endorse Alex Padilla for California Secretary of State

Sacramento – San Diego elected officials today endorsed Senator Alex Padilla for California Secretary of State, joining a growing list of support for Padilla that includes Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, John A. Pérez, Speaker of the California State Assembly and dozens of state legislators, Congressmembers and local elected officials from throughout California.

The Padilla for Secretary of State campaign announced that its support in San Diego includes Congressmen Scott Peters and Juan Vargas, State Senator Ben Hueso and Assemblymembers Toni Atkins, Lorena Gonzalez and Shirley Weber.

“Senator Alex Padilla is an innovative leader who understands that we can strengthen California’s democracy and economy by modernizing California government to make voting easier, starting a business simpler and campaign finance more transparent,” said Assemblymember Toni Atkins.

“Alex Padilla has a unique combination of solid middle class values and fresh, innovative ideas that will make him a remarkable Secretary of State.  California needs a chief elections officer who is not only passionate about increasing voter participation, but who has the skills and record of accomplishment to implement the new technologies and bold ideas that will empower a new generation of California voters,”
said Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez.

“As a mechanical engineer and member of the MIT Board of Directors, Alex Padilla brings a unique approach to California’s complex problems that require modern, technological solutions.  As Secretary of State he will employ the latest technology, implement proven strategies and bring the best minds in the state together to make voting easier and more accessible throughout California,”
said Congressman Scott Peters.

Said Senator Padilla, “I am honored to receive these endorsements.  As Secretary of State, my priorities will be to expand voter participation, make it easier to start a new business, and ensure access to government and campaign records.  In order to expand voter participation, we need to increase voter registration, make voting more accessible and convenient, and ensure that every vote is counted and accounted for.”

State Senator Alex Padilla represents more than 1.1 million residents in the 20th District, which includes most of the San Fernando Valley in the city of Los Angeles.  Alex was first elected to the State Senate in 2006 after serving seven years on the Los Angeles City Council, including four years as Council President.  He graduated from MIT with a Mechanical Engineering degree and now serves on the MIT Board of Trustees.  Alex serves as Chair of the Senate Energy Committee and is currently President of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials. He lives in Sherman Oaks with his wife Angela and their two young sons.
