SEIU California Endorses Alex Padilla for Secretary of State

Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California today announced the 700,000-member union’s endorsement of Alex Padilla for Secretary of State.  Hundreds of SEIU members from throughout the state participated in the endorsement process, which involved town hall style interviews with SEIU members throughout the State.

“Alex Padilla is a proven leader with a record of getting things done for working families and the middle class,” said Laphonza Butler, President of SEIU California and SEIU United Long-Term Care Workers (ULTCW).  “The son of working class immigrants and the youngest Latino ever elected to the LA City Council, Alex Padilla knows the struggles and challenges of SEIU members working to build a brighter future for their families.  We are proud to endorse Alex Padilla for Secretary of State because we know he will continue to fight for working people by increasing participation in elections, strengthening campaign finance laws and streamlining the Secretary of State’s business division to create jobs.”

Senator Padilla responded to SEIU’s endorsement: “I am honored to have the support of hardworking janitors, security guards, healthcare professionals and public servants from throughout California.  Throughout my career I have fought to strengthen the middle class and give regular people a larger voice in government.  That’s why I’m running for Secretary of State: to motivate more Californians to participate in elections and get more people engaged in civic life.”

SEIU joins a growing list of support for Padilla that includes California League of Conservation Voters, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, United Farm Workers and dozens of state legislators, Congressmembers and local elected officials from throughout California.
